The Healing Buddhas, or Buddha Doctors, whose function is to release living beings from outer and inner sickness. In the centre is Medicine Buddha. His body of blue wisdom light indicates that he is an emanation of the healing power of all the Buddhas, and his left hand holds a bowl filled with medicinal nectar and his right hand holds a medicinal plant. He is flanked by the remaining six. Above in the centre is Buddha Shakyamuni, who is not included within the seven. In the past the Seven Medicine Buddhas made special promises or dedication prayers to benefit living beings, altogether making forty-four such prayers.
