How to access downloadable products
Please note that all Tharpa audio products and some ebooks are downloaded as zip files and need to be unzipped before use. Here's how to access them:
- Log in to your account at www.tharpa.com/us;
- Click on My downloadable products in the left column.
- Click on the download links for the products you have purchased. If the status of a link is "Pending" rather than "Available" this indicates that the link is not yet available, for example if payment has not been received.
- If your browser gives you the option, choose "Save as" (do not choose "Open"). You can then download the zip file to your preferred location on your hard drive. If you are not given the option to "Save as," the download will be saved to the default download location.
- Ensure that your computer remains connected to the internet until the download is complete. Note that some downloads may take a long time depending on the speed of your connection.
- Once the download is complete, navigate to the location on your hard drive where the zip file is saved, right click on the file and choose "Extract all." Then choose where you want to save the individual audio files.
- Once extracted, the files can be accessed through your chosen media player.
What if I don't have the option to extract zip files?
If you right-click on the downloaded file and don't see the option to "Extract all" this may indicate you don't have the software installed to work with zip files. Most operating systems have a built in zip extractor but if your system does not you can download a free one here: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html. Choose the version for your operating system. PC, Mac and Linux is supported. 7Zip also supports a wide range of compression formats from .zip, .rar, to its own format, .7z. Tharpa downloads are provided in the .zip format.
After downloading and installing 7zip:
- Right click on the compressed file and go to the 7zip menu.
- Select "Extract files..."
- Choose where you want the files to be saved by clicking on the "..." button.
- 7zip will create a new folder in that directory with the same name as the compressed file. It will then extract the usable files into this folder.
Why are files provided in a zip format?
Most Tharpa audio products are multi-track products. If we provided tracks in an unzipped format you would have to download many more links. Using a zip format makes the download process much simpler.
Downloading eBooks
How do I download Tharpa eBooks to my iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch?
These instructions apply to Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch* devices.
First, check that your device's software is up to date and that you have the iBooks app installed on it: If you are using an iPad, you will also need to check that a zip application i.e. iZip is installed. You can purchase iBooks and iZip at the app store.
- Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. If prompted, allow iTunes to install the latest software update. When the update has completed, disconnect your device from your computer.
- Check that you have the iBooks app on your device. If you don't, install it from the AppStore app.
Then, EITHER -
Download the eBook directly on your device:
- In your browser log into your Tharpa.com account and go to the 'My downloadable products' section (in the left column)
- Click the relevant link to download the ebook you have purchased
- Wait for a few seconds as it loads.
- On the gray page that appears, select the button "Open in iBooks". (On devices with smaller screens such as iPod Touch, you may need to scroll around the page to find the button!)
- The iBooks app will open and the eBook will appear, ready to read!
OR -
Download the eBook to your computer and sync to your device using iTunes:
- On your computer log into your Tharpa.com account and go to the 'My downloadable products' section (in the left column)
- Click the relevant link to download the ebook you have purchased. Save it somewhere you can find it easily, such as your Desktop.
- Open iTunes on your computer.
- Drag the ePUB files into iTunes (NOT zip files - if you downloaded a zip, you will need to extract the ePUB files first).
- iTunes will import it, and the ebook will appear under "Books" in your iTunes Library.
- Connect your device to your computer and sync it with iTunes.
- Before disconnecting your device, check that the eBook has been transferred: select your device from the list on the left of iTunes, then select the "Books" tab in the window on the right. The checkbox for the Modern Buddhism eBook should be ticked. If it isn't, tick the checkbox and then select the "Sync" button at the bottom-right. iTunes will now transfer the book to your device.
- Disconnect your device from your computer. Open the iBooks app - the eBook will appear, ready to read!

*Please note - The first generation (2007) iPod Touch cannot be updated to run the iBooks software. If you find that you cannot install iBooks on your device, install the Kindle app from the AppStore instead, and download the Mobi version of Modern Buddhism.
How do I download Tharpa eBooks to my smartphone?
For this you need to purchase the ePub version of the ebook. You also need an eBook reading app such as the Nook, Sony Reader or Aldiko apps.
- On your computer log into your Tharpa.com account and go to the 'My downloadable products' section (in the left column)
- Right click the relevant link to download the ebook you have purchased. When prompted to open or save the file, select Save and select a location which is easy to find, such as your Downloads directory or the Desktop.
- Connect your Android to a USB port on your computer using a USB cable. Your Android will now appear as an external USB drive on your computer.
- Using your computer's file browser, locate and open the Android eBook app's folder.* Locate where you saved the book file, then drag and drop the book file into the Android eBook app's folder.*
- On your computer, you can now unmount or eject the Android from your computer and then unplug it from the USB cable. The book should now appear in the eBook app and be ready to read.

How do I download Tharpa eBooks to my Nook?
Download your book in the ePub format for your Nook.
- On your computer log into your Tharpa.com account and go to the 'My downloadable products' section (in the left column)
- Right click the relevant link to download the ebook you have purchased. When prompted to open or save the file, select Save and select a location which is easy to find, such as your Downloads directory or the Desktop.
- Connect your Nook to a USB port on your computer using the USB cable that came with your Nook. Your Nook will now appear as an external USB drive on your computer.
- Using your computer's file browser, locate and open the Nook's My Documents folder. Locate where you saved the book file, then drag and drop the book file into the Nook's My Documents folder.
- On your computer, you can now unmount or eject the Nook from your computer and then unplug it from the USB cable. The book should now appear on the Nook's Home screen and be ready to read.

How do I download Tharpa eBooks to my Windows or Mac computer?
- Go to this page to install Adobe Digital Editions on your computer (its free)
- On your computer log into your Tharpa.com account and go to the 'My downloadable products' section (in the left column)
- Right click the relevant link to download the ebook you have purchased. When prompted to open or save the file, select Save and select a location which is easy to find, such as your Downloads directory or the Desktop.
- Using your computer's file browser, locate where you saved the book files. You should be able to double click on the book file, and it will open the book in Adobe Digital Editions.
